"If you haven't been to Jokhang you haven't been to Tibet."

Jokhang is the first/oldest Buddhist Temple in Tibet. All Buddhist pilgrimages lead to Jokhang.

It was built by King Songsten Gampo in the 6th C to attract his Chinese (Buddist) wife to Tibet. She brought with her (as dowry) many Buddhist treasures and statues, which are housed in Jokhang. Their union was an important step in blending Indian (Jokhan's architecture is inspired by ancient Indian Buddhism), Tibetan, and Chinese cultures.
